Saturday, I had the honor of giving my parents their flowers.

Not only did they show up for me throughout life, including my mental health challenges, but they also show up to support me in supporting others with their challenges!

They may not always understand my vision, but they will always sign up for the ride. I had to publicly let them know how much their showing up does not go unnoticed.

Yesterday was one for the books. Our Mental Health Awareness Walk and Gala showed just how powerful community can be when we come together. The energy was real, filled with love, encouragement, and hope. Seeing so many of you show up reminded me why this work matters.

Thank you to everyone who walked, gave, volunteered, or simply showed up with open hearts. You didn’t just look good, you showed the power of what happens when we stand together to break cycles and build bridges.

And a special thank you to Casey for your tireless work and partnership in being who WE needed when we were younger.

This is bigger than an event. It’s a movement. Together, we’ll keep walking, talking, and fighting for mental health. For my community specifically, don't just talk about people; talk with them in hopes of helping them.

As we step into a new school year, I had the honor of coloring and reminding Robeson County’s incredible Pre-K teachers and assistants that serving others doesn’t mean losing yourself.

Every crayon mark, every hug, every lesson they give adds color to a child’s life. But it’s just as important that they pause, restore, and add color back into their own.

Serving others is powerful, but preserving yourself is essential. This school year, don’t forget, you’re part of the masterpiece too.

And I appreciate my driver and riders coming along to help out. Preciate you, fellas!

Had to pull up on my guys

Raised to ‘man up,’ I learned to bury my tears so deep they forgot the way out.

Now I know better. I know that tears are not weakness, but release. I’ve learned to name my feelings, sit with them, even honor them. Yet sometimes, the tears still won’t fall when the wave comes.

That’s the residue of a lifetime of emotional armor. Healing is knowing the urge is progress, even if the cry doesn’t come.

Raised to ‘man up,’ I learned to bury my tears so deep they forgot the way out.

We started the @thevelascofamilyfoundation Life Ready Retreat, setting the tone about mental health, utilizing the wheel of emotions, and the Why Eustressin’ journal.

Luckily, @dr.brad.hambric was in attendance, too. So we had an impromptu mock session to show the young men what therapy can look like between two Black men who are tapped into the culture.

One of the key things I like to start my therapeutic relationships with is letting them know who they are sitting with. Not the credentials behind my name, but who I am within the context of why mental health is important to me.

Yeah, school talks about self-disclosure, but this disclosure (within reason) is a key component of building a therapeutic relationship.

Even as a therapist, when I go to therapy, I need to know who I’m talking to.

So yeah, who are you, Doc?

With our Beyond Fences Initiative, I took my boys from Bertie, roots deep in the soil, and brought them to the mountains to remind them they can rise.

From mental health talks and vision boards to basketball tournaments and conversations with former NFL players, VPs, and other influential men, these young men stretched their minds, spirits, and bodies.

Thanks to @kidfromwrens and @thevelascofamilyfoundation for holding space where Black boys could be loud, soft, curious, strong, and everything in between.

This was more than a retreat.
It was a return to self.

I heard the truth. Life is too short to love from a distance, and time goes fast. That track reiterated that time with my pops is precious and not promised.

So when he randomly pulls up on a Sunday morning, headed to Lowe’s, and wants Waffle House, let’s do it!

Even with all the people I help, care for, and show up with, it’ll be a little empty if I didn’t do it for my guy.
